Mount Meru, Tanzania's second-highest peak at over 4,500 metres, sits within Arusha National Park and is widely considered the ideal acclimatization trek before Kilimanjaro. The route climbs gradually through forest and grassland, with frequent sightings of buffalo, giraffe, and colobus monkeys along the way. Higher up, trekkers follow the dramatic crater rim before reaching a summit that rewards with spectacular sunrise views, often stretching across to Kilimanjaro. A small drive from the Hotel to Momella gate Where Your Mount Meru climb begins inside Arusha National Park, where an armed ranger leads the way through open grassland and montane forest. The trail passes buffalo wallows, giant fig trees, clear streams, and troops of black-and-white colobus monkeys moving through the canopy. The ascent is steady but gentle, making this an excellent first day for settling into the rhythm of the mountain.
Leaving the forest behind, the trail climbs into the heather and moorland zone where the landscape becomes more rugged and volcanic. The path opens onto wide views of the Meru caldera, ash cone, and the ridges of Little Meru. As you gain height, the air grows cooler and the scenery becomes increasingly dramatic, with giant lobelias and rocky slopes marking the approach to high altitude.
Shortly after midnight, summit day begins. Headlamps cut through the darkness as the trail climbs steeply toward Rhino Point before joining the narrow crater rim ridge. Some sections are exposed and require careful footing, but the reward is extraordinary. At dawn, you reach Socialist Peak, the summit of Mount Meru at 4,566 metres. Sunrise from the summit is one of the finest in Tanzania, often revealing Mount Kilimanjaro floating above a sea of clouds. After time on the summit, descend back to Saddle Hut for a brief rest before continuing the long descent through moorland and forest to Miriakamba.
The final morning is a relaxed descent through the lush lower forest of Arusha National Park. With luck, you may spot giraffe, buffalo, warthog, or colobus monkeys once more as you make your way back to the gate.
